Higher
Music at Higher is aimed at those students who gained an A, B or C at Int. 2, or those musicians in school who already perform at approx. Grade 4 level.
This course is based on three core elements of music: performing, inventing and listening. All students will have to study each element to gain an overall award.
The course structure itself follows the Intermediate 1 & 2 models:
There are two different courses on offer - Music with Performing and Music with Technology.
Music with Performing
1 - A performance on an instrument / voice lasting 10 minutes. This can also be performed as a solo or as part of a group and is minimum Associated Board requirements grade 4.
2 - A performance on another instrument / voice lasting 6 minutes. This can also be performed as a solo or as part of a group and is minimum Associated Board requirements grade 4.
3 - A composition / arrangement lasting over 2 minutes, accompanied by a short programme note.
4 - A listening paper lasting approximately 60 minutes.
Music with Technology
1 - A performance on an instrument / voice lasting 6 minutes. This can also be performed solo or as part of a group and is minimum Associated Board requirements grade 4.
2 - Midi Sequencing: this unit explores the world of contemporary computerised music and requires the student to remix / compose a short piece on computer lasting a minimum time of 3 minutes.
3 - A composition / arrangement lasting over 2 minutes, accompanied by a short programme note.
4 - A listening paper lasting approximately 60 minutes.
Advanced Higher Music
Advanced Higher is aimed at students who can perform or invent to a high level. It is a fairly good preparation for Universities and Colleges of Music and students who wish to enter the recording studio business and enables pupils to specialise in a wide variety of musical activities, although many further education courses in music require some theoretical knowledge not covered in the SQA coursework.
Musical skills, techniques, knowledge, understanding and evaluating, form the basis of the Advanced Higher Course.
There are two different courses on offer - Music with Performing and Music with Technology.

1 - A performance on an instrument / voice lasting 15 minutes. This can also be performed as a solo or as part of a group and is
minimum Associated Board requirements grade 5.
