Music with Performing
Course Description
These courses provide a practical and theoretical pathway into the field of musical performance. Pupils will learn the skills that will enable them to perform on at least two instruments or one instrument and voice. Pupils will also learn the historical and theoretical context in which their performances occur, enabling them to produce a performance that is stylisticall appropriate in each separate genre of music. This is predominantly a practical course, giving pupils the time to build a solid technique on each instrument or voice. In addition they will also learn how to compose a short contemporary work in which many aspects of the skills learned through performance and musical theoretical knowledge will be utilized. Pupils will also learn how to perform in both a solo and group environment, and will perform regularly in class to gain the confidence and technical skill required of a competent young musician.
Skills Development
The aims of the course are to allow learners to develop:
- A solid musical technique on a variety of instruments or voice
- An appreciation of the stylistic requirements in each musical genre
- The theoretical skills required to understand the requirements of the composer
- The ability to work in a solo and group environment
- Skills in planning and producing a musical composition
- Knowledge and understanding of musical notation
Unit Breakdown
National 4 (Pass / Fail)
Performing
Pupils will learn performance skills on a range of instruments or voice. Pupils will perform a wide variety of musical styles in a solo and group environment lasting in total 8 minutes.
Composition
Pupils will use the theoretical skills learned through performance to produce a short contemporary musical composition.
Added Value Unit
This unit will develop listening skills that will enable pupils to understand and interpret a range of contemporary musical styles.
National 5 (Grades A - D)
Performance
Pupils will complete the same tasks as those pupils studying at National 4 level, but will be expected to produce evidence showing a greater depth of knowledge, understanding and application.
Composition
Pupils will complete the same tasks as those pupils studying at National 4 level, but will be expected to produce evidence showing a greater depth of knowledge, understanding and application.
Added Value Unit
Pupils will learn additional musical concepts as those required at National 4 level.
Exam
Pupils will be expected to apply their aural and theoretical skills in a short listening paper.
Progression / Career Pathways
This course provides progression to the Higher Music with Performing course. Pupils may also wish to study other music courses at N5 such as Music Technology which focuses on the skills required in a modern recording studio. Career pathways include: Performing, Teaching, Recording, Music Management.
