Senior School In Prestwick Academy
For those who stay on into S5/S6, this is the stage, even more so than S3/S4, where you will create the launch pad for your future after school; most importantly where you are aiming for college/university.
In making subject choices for senior school, you must take great care. Do not simply plunge into choices without examining the details in this booklet. You may find some surprises by actually reading it. You should also discuss planned choices with adults who may have points of advice to make. This would include Guidance teacher, Careers Officer, Year Head and parent(s).
Choices of subjects are not just about the subjects themselves but about realistic levels of subjects. Only a moderate percentage of students will take a full straight 5 Highers. It is far better to pass an Intermediate 2 than to fail at Higher. Consider your performance in S3/S4 and choose wisely.
Students in S5 who intend to leave at the end of the year to go to college, should ensure that they gather their information and make applications in good time. For those in S6, the UCAS process will get underway from the start of the new timetable and new session.

Options Choices
The subjects in columns A to E usually have six periods. Exceptions to this include the S6 Pathways Programme and some Advanced Higher courses.
Only current S5 pupils may choose from the S6 Pathways Programme.
All pupils must choose a subject in each column with English (column B or D) and Mathematics (column A or C) being recommended for S5 pupils. Pupils not opting for English or Mathematics in S5 must be able to demonstrate that no further qualification will be necessary for their future career.
The subjects indicated on the option form will only run if sufficient pupils opt for them. Equally, pupils may have to re-opt if certain courses are over-subscribed.
