On Wednesday 20th June, a small group of pupils were allowed on to the site of GE Caledonian and given a tour of their facilities.
After a short introduction, the pupils were split into groups of 4 and then shown how GE Caledonian maintains and repairs aircraft engines. They were shown how the engines were taken apart and then every single piece, no matter how small, is inspected before being repaired or replaced. Several pupils were given to chance to hold pieces of engine worth hundreds of pounds, and my group were shown a single engine part that costs around £800 000!
Next on the tour was a viewing of the Turbine test room, where the engines are checked before being put back onto planes. Unfortunately there were no tests scheduled for the day we were visiting, but it was all incredibly interesting.
Many thanks to GE Caledonian for showing us what happens in their buildings and we look forward to them visiting us next year.
UK Maths Team Challenge
After a wet start, (the walk from the train station), the Prestwick Academy team of four arrived at Paisley University for the UKMT team challenge. The four pupils are selected from first and second year and included Amy Cairns (S1), Cameron Findly (S1), Andrew Shaw (S2) and Kai Skeock, after some team bonding on the train the team were ready for action.
With four exciting rounds: Group Competition, Crossnumber, Head-to-Head Competition and Relay Race, the group waited expectantly for the results. The team were overjoyed when it was announced they had come in 10th in this national competition.
